What to expect in our services

If you don’t usually attend a church we understand it might seem a little strange and daunting the first time you come to visit! Please be assured of a very warm welcome if you choose to come and visit us at Bury St Edmunds Presbyterian Church, and we hope we can make you feel at home and answer any questions you might have. There are no bad questions!

The worship services on Sunday normally last around an hour. After the morning service we gather around some refreshments to meet and chat with one another.

During the service you can follow what is going on by looking at the printed order of service, which you can pick up as you come in.

When we worship we sing both hymns and psalms as an expression of thanks and devotion to God. Some of our songs are joyful and celebratory, some are more contemplative, quiet and meditative. Please do join in and sing with us if you feel able to.

We will also join in prayer together, listen to the Bible read, and the minister will speak, usually for around half an hour. This is called the sermon and in it the minister will explain and apply the teaching of the Bible to us today. We believe that when these things take place God is really present with us, and speaks to us through the Bible. We hope you will come to hear and learn more. Twice a month we share in what we call the Lord’s Supper, or communion. Occasionally we also celebrate a baptism.

We hope we can give you a warm and loving welcome by sharing the love of Christ with you. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask one of the ministers, elders, or church members for help.

Above all, when we meet, we gather to praise and worship God and we hope you can join us in this!

What to expect for families and children

Scripture holds out to us the example of the family of God hearing His word and worshiping together as one family of all ages (Duet. 29:10). One of the chief duties of Christian parents is to teach their children in the ways of the Lord (Deut. 6:6-7/Eph. 6:4) and one of the ways that they do this is by bringing them to worship together with the people of God and sit under His word. Therefore, at Bury St Edmunds Presbyterian church we joyfully encourage families to worship together with their children of all ages.

You can pick up children’s bibles for use in the service on your way into church and there are often sheets matching the topic of the sermon which your children can colour. The minsters sometimes include elements in their sermon particularly for children to help them feel that the sermon is for them as well. For the youngest children we provide a staffed creche for families who wish to use it. For nursing mothers and others with small children, a cry room with a sermon relay is also available. Please ask for details when you arrive at church.

We are keenly aware that it is a great challenge for young children to worship in the service and sit through sermons, but the fruit of children who grow up experiencing the joy of worshiping their God from the earliest age is a sweet reward. We endeavour to provide encouragement and practical helps to parents and children alike towards this glorious end!
